Summary

India is the third largest producer of fruit in the world (with Brazil and the US in first and second positions respectively) and is the second largest producer of vegetables (China being the leader in this sector). India supplies about 8% of worldwide fruit and vegetable production. The total cultivated surface area devoted to fruit and vegetables is 10.56 million hectares, this being an increase of 50% in 1995 with respect to 1991. In India, only small quantities (1.3%) of fruit and vegetables are industrially processed, whereas 75% of fruit and vegetables are processed in Brazil and the Philippines. Although it is the second largest producer of fruit and vegetables, India handles only 1.2% of international trade in this sector.
