THERMALLY, A HEAT PUMP IS ADVANTAGEOUS ONLY IF NO TEMPERATURE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN HOT AND COLD SOURCES EXCEEDS 40 K (40 DEG C). THE COMPETITIVITY OF HEAT PUMPS CAN BE APPRECIATED IN TERMS OF TWO CRITERIA, PRIMARY ENERGY CONSUMPTION AND THE PROCESS ECONOMICS. ECONOMIC EFFICIENCY DATA ARE GIVEN FOR VARIOUS CONDITIONS. THE HEAT PUMP CAN HAVE AN OPEN OR A CLOSED CIRCUIT. THE FIRST TYPE OF MACHINE, ON R12, OPERATES WITHOUT PROBLEM AT 343 K (70 DEG C) AND CAN REACH TEMPERATURES OF 393 K (120 DEG C). VARIOUS APPLICATIONS ARE STUDIED: DRYING BY CONVECTION, HEAT RECOVERY ON A REFRIGERANT WITHOUT CHANGE OF STATE, SIMULTANEOUS HEAT AND COLD SUPPLY, DISCHARGE OF WATER VAPOUR AT HIGH TEMPERATURE. THE SECOND TYPE OF MACHINE, WITH MECHANICAL WATER VAPOUR COMPRESSION, IS IMPLEMENTED FOR CONCENTRATION BY EVAPORATION ; AT PRESENT, THERE MAY BE 200 PLANTS OF THIS TYPE WITH MORE THAN 1 T / H EVAPORATIVE CAPACITY ; THE PERFORMANCES OF THESE MACHINES ARE WITH OR WITHOUT SUPPLEMENTARY THERMOCOMPRESSION STAGE (FLOW NOZZLE) ; THE PERFORMANCES OF THE PROCESS WITH MECHANICAL WATER VAPOUR COMPRESSION AND ITS ECONOMIC INVOLVEMENTS ARE STUDIED AND DISCUSSED. A NEW TYPE OF HEAT PUMP IS BEING TESTED: THE HEAT PUMP WITH WATER FOR THE REFRIGERANT IN CLOSED CIRCUIT ; THIS MACHINE CAN BE USED ON SECTIONS AT TEMPERATURES THAT MAY REACH 393-403 K (120-130 DEG C). ONE DIFFICULTY IS THE SELECTION OF THE COMPRESSOR AND ITS ADJUSTMENT TO OPERATING CONDITIONS. A.G.
