THE REFRIGERATING SYSTEM SERVICING THE ICE SKATING RINK OF THE BRISBANE BICENTENARY SPORTS AND ENTERTAINMENT COMPLEX IS A LIQUID RECIRCULATION SYSTEM CIRCULATING R22 THROUGH CONTINUOUS STEEL TUBES EMBEDDED IN THE ALL PURPOSE CONCRETE FLOOR. THE PLANT IS DESIGNED TO MAINTAIN ONE 30 X 60 METRE ICERINK WHILST AT THE SAME TIME BUILDING A 15 MM THICK ICE SHEET IN 12 HOURS ON ANOTHER RINK FLOOR OF EQUIVALENT SIZE. THE REFRIGERATING CAPACITY INSTALLED IS 740 KILOW AT THE DESIGN POINT. THERMODYNAMIC PERFORMANCE DATA, REFRIGERANT CIRCULATION RATE, HEAT LOAD, OIL RETURN AND DISTRIBUTION SYSTEM AND THE CAPACITY CONTROL ARE DESCRIBED. DURING PRACTICAL OPERATION THE CALCULATED HOLDING HEAT LOADS HAVE BEEN CONFIRMED ACCURATE WITHIN ABOUT 10% AND THE REQUIRED ICE BUILD TIME OF 12 HOURS FOR A 15 MM THICK ICE SHEET WAS ACHIEVED.
