The impact of the Montreal and the Kyoto Protocol on new developments in refrigeration and air-conditioning.

Author(s) : KUIJPERS L. J. M.

Summary

The paper presents an assessment of the impact of the Montreal and the Kyoto Protocol on the developments in the refrigeration and air conditioning sector. Although the Montreal Protocol does not address the consumption of HFCs in a direct manner, arguments stemming from the control of ozone depleting substances will directly influence the use of HFCs and other non-ODP options. For the global warming, Parties have recently adopted a Kyoto Protocol which has not yet entered into force. In the "Kyoto Protocol" the emissions of a number of greenhouse gases are controlled as total global warming emissions per country, with a first reduction target for the year 2010. This implies that each country has the freedom to determine how to curb emissions of specific gases where HFCs are part of the total, the "basket". In the paper an attempt is made to give a short list of possible developments for the different sub-sectors in refrigeration and air-conditioning in both the developed and the developing countries.
