Summary

CULTIVARS MANTIQUEIRA AND BINTJE WERE STORED FOR 154 DAYS IN DARK CHAMBERS AT 278, 283 AND 293 K (5, 10 AND 20 DEG C) AND AT ROOM TEMPERATURE. DETERMINATIONS OF THE FRESH AND DRY WEIGHTS, SPROUTING PERCENTAGE AND SPROUT LENGTH WERE MADE AT 14 DAY INTERVALS. HIGH TEMPERATURES REDUCED THE DORMANT PERIOD BY 50% WHILE LOW TEMPERATURES INCREASED THIS ABOUT 170%. MANTIQUEIRA TUBERS HAD THEIR DORMANT PERIOD BROKEN EARLIER THAN THOSE OF THE BINTJE. CHANGE IN SKIN COLOUR WAS OBSERVED WHEN KEPT AT 278 K. THE MAXIMUM TUBER WEIGHT LOSS OCCURRED AT 293 K, BINTJE PRESENTED A GREATER LOSS OF WEIGHT, AND LONGER SPROUT. AT 278 K, TUBERS OF MANTIQUEIRA EXHIBITED GREATER LOSS OF TOTAL FRESH WEIGHT AND WATER THAN DID BINTJE.
