The Kelvin force and Liu force acting on a ferromagnetic material or fluid in a magnetic field and their relations to thermodynamic potentials.

Author(s) : EGOLF P. W., KITANOVSKI A.

Summary

In turbine machinery different kind of works are known, namely the external work, the technical work and the absolute work. The technical work is sometimes also named shaft work. It is just this work which is available at the shaft of a turbine wheel. In this article an analogy between a turbine and a magnetocaloric refrigerating machine is presented and discussed. The analogue (negative) value to the technical work available in a turbine is the work, which has to be performed by turning a magnetocaloric wheel into a magnetic heat pump or refrigerator through its magnetic field. It is experienced that the Kelvin force and the newly proposed force of Liu and Odenbach play a crucial role in these considerations.
