The latest progress of absorption refrigeration in China.

Author(s) : CHEN G., HE Y.

Summary

Absorption refrigeration has many advantages and is one of the important developing fields in refrigeration. Great progress in absorption refrigeration, including the development of advanced absorption refrigeration theory and technology as well as applications, has been achieved in China recently. There are more than 20 institutes involved in research on absorption refrigeration, e.g. the Chinese Academy of Science, Zhejiang University, Xi'an Jiaotong University, Shanghai Jiaotong University, Southeast University, University of Shanghai for Science and Technology, The Chinese University of Hong Kong etc. The subjects of research involve almost all the key aspects of absorption refrigeration. Some advanced absorption refrigeration cycles, such as an absorption refrigeration cycle at low temperatures as well as an absorption refrigeration cycle with new functions are originally proposed and studied. Much progress has been successfully achieved. The investigation of heat and mass transfer enhancement and dynamic simulation for an absorption refrigeration system are also carried out. With regard to the application of absorption refrigeration systems, marvellous achievements have been obtained in mainland China. Many advanced types of lithium bromide absorption chillers have been manufactured on a large scale, including a direct-fired double-effect, hot-water-operated two-stage and waste-heat-operated chiller. Now, mainland China is the largest manufacturer of lithium bromide absorption chillers (heat pumps) in the world. In 2005, there were about 7000 units of lithium bromide absorption chillers produced, i.e. twice as many as in 1997. Besides the commercial and residential applications, lithium bromide absorption chillers (heat pumps) have been successfully applied in industrial contexts up untill now.
