Type of article: Periodical article

Summary

The guide reviews in detail proposals to elevate the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to Cabinet status, and the use of risk assessment procedures to ensure that any proposed legislative changes did not place an undue burden on industry. Environmental justice is also considered at length, in particular the placing of industrial sites near communities, as is the controversial cleanup program (Superfund) run by the EPA. Only 217 sites have been cleaned up from a list of 1660 sites with a possible total of 11,500. The Administration has put forward remedy selection and cleanup standards together with allocation of liability procedures. Other items considered in the Guide are the requirements of the Clean Water Act and the Safe Drinking Water Act. The American Frozen Foods Institute's position on all the above issues is clearly stated. G.R.S.
