Summary

IMPORTANCE OF THE DISCOVERY OF THE 95 K SUPERCONDUCTOR, AN UNUSUAL OXIDE WITH COPPER-OXYGEN-COPPER CHAINS IN WHICH THE OXYGEN ATOMS PLAY A CRITICAL ROLE FOR SUPERCONDUCTIVITY. SOME OF THE UNUSUAL FEATURES OF THIS COMPOUND GO AGAINST THE PREDICTIONS OF THE ESTABLISHED THEORY OF SUPERCONDUCTIVITY. REVIEW OF THE APPLICATIONS OF HIGH TEMPERATURE OXIDE SUPERCONDUCTORS IN ELECTROMAGNETIC TECHNOLOGY AND SOLID STATE SCIENCE. STRENGTH AND WEAKNESS OF INDIA IN THIS AREA: ONLY A FEW GROUPS OF SCIENTISTS HAVE WORKED ON HIGH TEMPERATURE SUPERCONDUCTIVITY FROM EARLY 1987 ONWARDS AND THE MAIN PROJECT OF INDIA IS TO DEVELOP COMPETENT TEAMS ON THAT SUBJECT SO AS TO MAKE SURE THAT, WHEN ANY NEW DISCOVERY OR TECHNOLOGICAL DEVELOPMENT COMES ALONG IN THE NEAR FUTURE, INDIA WILL BE ABLE TO CATCH UP WITHOUT ANY LOSS TIME.
