The ozone vanishes.
Author(s) : LEMONICK M. D.
Type of article: Article, Review
Summary
The article puts the entire ozone depletion problem into easily understood layman's language. Starting in general terms, the discovery, cause and effect of ozone depletion is described, with particular reference to the growing urgency as the problem exceeds expectations in its extent. The mechanism of ozone attack is explained, emphasis being placed on the irregular weather patterns controlling polar vortexes which can store CFC breakdown products in an accumulative manner. World reaction to CFC usage is described, with warnings of problems as yet unsolved. The impractical task of treating CFCs already in the atmosphere is discussed. D.W.H.
