Greenhouse effect gases.

Les gaz à effet de serre.

Author(s) : LAMBERT G.

Type of article: Article, Review

Summary

Paper assembling the main results of observations made during the last 20 years on the extent of problems created by the "greenhouse effect" gas emissions as a result of human activities. The author presents successively: nature of the accused gases, their source, difficulty of measuring the evolution of the most reactive species and the respective contribution of each gas, the part of natural greenhouse effect, role of water vapour, biogeochemical cycle of CO2 and its evolution with time, role of methane (and the uncertainties on its biogeochemical cycle), role of nitrous oxide, CFCs, etc. Then, the author explains the so-called "radiative forcing" phenomenon and the concept of "global warming potential" (GWP). He emphasizes the remaining uncertainties in the evaluation of greenhouse effect phenomena, in particular due to the constant reviewing of the climatic impact of emissions of different gases. J.R.
