THE AUTHORS HAVE DESIGNED,MANUFACTURED AND TESTED PROTOTYPE THERMOSIPHON-BASED HEAT EXCHANGERS FOR RECOVERY OF EXHAUST ENERGY IN ORDER TO PREHEAT THE REGENERATING AIR STREAM. THE PAPER PRESENTS AN OUTLINE OF THE DESIGN PROCESS AND SOME OF THE MAIN DESIGN PARAMETERS OF THE FIRST PROTOTYPE HEAT EXCHANGER. THE MEASURED EFFECTIVENESS OF THE PROTOTYPE HEAT EXCHANGER, UNDER TYPICAL OPERATING CONDITION, WAS 70% AND A SIMPLE PAYBACK PERIOD FOR THE HEAT EXCHANGER IS ESTIMATED TO BE LESS THAN 4 MONTHS.
