Summary

THIS PAPER DESCRIBES THE TECHNICAL FEATURES OF THE REFRIGERATING STATIONS INSTALLED AT THE HEAD OF THE PIPELINE CONVEYING NATURAL GAS FROM SIBERIAN FIELDS TO CENTRAL EUROPE. GAS COOLING TO 269 K (-4 DEG C) IS NECESSARY TO PREVENT THAWING OF THE PERMAFROST AND CONSEQUENT PIPE SUBSIDENCE. THERE ARE SIX STATIONS TO HANDLE A TOTAL FLOW RATE OF 430 MILLION CUBIC METRES PER DAY OF NATURAL GAS. ALL THE STATIONS ARE EQUIPPED WITH BASIC REFRIGERATING SYSTEMS USING PROPANE (R290) AS THE REFRIGERANT AS IT IS EASILY AVAILABLE FROM NEAR BY GAS FIELD FACILITIES. E. F.
