Summary

Today the trend, followed by both the government and private industry, is to allow the merchant sector to build plants at their sites. Thus, Hindustan Copper Ltd has allowed a 50 ton per day on-site cryogenic air separation plant to be set at Khetri, and another 15 ton per day pressure swing adsorption plant at Ghatshila. In fact, there are approximately 250 air separation units in India. These units are of various sizes: 40-400 m3 per hour, 500-1000 m3 per hour, 50-500 tons/day. The first two categories are mainly in the merchant sector, and the last category is basically with the captive sector. As world is changing it is imperative for India to change also. India, with its immense natural resources and being the second highest pool of trained manpower in the world, is sure to forge ahead. J.V.
