Summary

NEW INTEREST HAS TRIGGERED IN THE COLD AIR CYCLE, BECAUSE OF THE HARMLESS NATURE OF THE REFRIGERANT, AIR. SOME OF THE POSSIBLE VARIANTS OF THE AIR CYCLE ARE PRESENTED. THE MOST PROMISING ALTERNATIVE TO THE VAPOUR COMPRESSION CYCLE IS THE SO-CALLED OPEN JOULE CYCLE, KNOWN IN THE USA AS THE OPEN REVERSE BRAYTON CYCLE. THE EFFICIENCY OF THE CYCLE IS EXTREMELY DEPENDENT ON THE EFFICIENCIES OF THE COMPRESSORS AND EXPANDERS USED IN THE CYCLE. POSSIBLE ALTERNATIVE SYSTEMS ARE DISUSD EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS OBTAINED WITH SUCH A MACHINE ARE PRESENTED.
