A practical application of the Joule air cycle to vehicle air conditioning.

Author(s) : FITT P. W.

Summary

The author describes a practical way of adapting the Joule cycle for use in motor car air conditioning systems to match the typical performance of existing vapour compression systems. Low cost and easy physical integration with engine and bodywork have been primary targets. The scheme of the proposed system is given. Engine antifreeze coolant is used as a secondary refrigerant which is circulated between the load heat exchanger and a passenger compartment heat exchanger, doubling as a heater. An engine-driven generator provides alternating current to the powered bootstrap motor, and to the 12 volt battery system. All the components described are based on available technology.
