Summary
Most of existing buildings in Italy present roof covering consisting in natural clay tiles. In particular, more than 90% of historic buildings located in urban city centers have traditional clay tiles as roof covering, largely impacting thermal-energy performance of buildings. In this view, the optimization of these traditional elements could represent a key research issue, by taking into account building energy retrofit purpose and the constraint to preserve architectural heritage of such constructions. This paper concerns the year-round analysis of the thermal-energy performance of a typical XVI century historic residential building located in the city center of Perugia, Italy. A two-floor residential unit has been continuously monitored in order to calibrate and validate the dynamic simulation model of the building. Specific analyses are carried out by comparing the effect of prototyped cool roof clay tiles in reducing building energy requirement for cooling and operative temperature of the attic. Main results of dynamic simulation of the case study building show that the proposed non-invasive tiles, with good visual similarity with respect to the classic tiles, represent an effective solution to improve building energy efficiency during the cooling season. Even if the climate of the case study location has important prevalence of heating requirement, cool tiles largely contribute to reduce summer cooling need, without considerably affecting building winter heating requirement. In fact, cooling energy saving corresponds up to 51%, while heating energy penalty is lower than 2%. Additionally, the number of hours when the attic is hotter than 26°C in terms of operative temperature, decreases up to 40%, while the overcooling hours increase of 1%. Consistent findings are showed in terms of degree hours. Therefore, proposed tiles with optimized cool coatings are showed to represent an effective non-invasive
strategy to optimize thermal-energy performance of historic buildings with residential function, even in moderate and temperate climate.
