Summary

THE PAPER EXAMINES THE THERMAL PERFORMANCE CHARACTERISTICS OF A FINNED-TUBE HEAT EXCHANGER OF THE TYPE COMMONLY USED AS AN EVAPORATOR IN DOMESTIC REFRIGERATORS. A LOW-TEMPERATURE EXPERIMENTAL TEST SETUP WAS DEVELOPED TO EMULATE THE ACTUAL OPERATING CONDITIONS OF THE REFRIGERATOR APPLICATION. FOR THIS INITIAL STAGE OF TESTING, A SINGLE-PHASE LIQUID WAS USED ON THE TUBE SIDE OF THE HEAT EXCHANGER. THE EFFECTS OF TUBE GEOMETRY, FIN SPACING, AND FIN THICKNESS UPON THE PERFORMANCE OF THE HEAT EXCHANGER WERE ANALYZED. ADDITIONAL TESTS WERE CONDUCTED FROM WHICH THE TUBE/FIN CONTACT RESISTANCE WAS ESTIMATED.
