Summary

THERMAL PERFORMANCE MEASUREMENTS OF A 100% POLYESTER MULTILAYER INSULATION SYSTEM FOR THE SSC, WERE CONDUCTED IN A HEAT LEAK TEST FACILITY. A REPORT IS GIVEN OF THE INSTRUMENTATION AND EXPERIMENTAL PREPARATION USED IN CARRYING OUT THESE MEASUREMENTS. TESTS CONDUCTED TO EXPLORE THE THERMAL PERFORMANCE OF 2 CANDIDATE BLANKET JOINT CONFIGURATIONS, EACH EMPLOYING A VARIATION OF A STEPPED-BUTTED JOINT NESTED BETWEEN SEWN BLANKET SEAMS ARE REPORTED. THE RESULTS FROM THE JOINT CONFIGURATIONS ARE COMPARED TO MEASUREMENTS MADE DESCRIBING THE THERMAL PERFORMANCE OF THE BASIC BLANKET MATERIALS AS TESTED IN AN IDEAL JOINT CONFIGURATION.
