THERMAL RESPONSE OF HOUSES RESULTING FROM HEATING AND COOLING INTERRUPTIONS.

Summary

ANALYTICAL TRANSIENT MODELING OF HEAT FLUXES AND TEMPERATURES IN STRUCTURES WAS CONDUCTED TO EXAMINE THE EFFECT OF VARIOUS CHARACTERISTICS ON THE TEMPERATURE RESPONSE UNDER UNUSUAL OPERATING AND EXTREME WEATHER CONDITIONS. THE EFFECT OF THERMAL MASS ON THE INSIDE TEMPERATURE DRIFT AFTER A CUTOFF OR A POWER OUTAGE WAS EXAMINED. INSIDE AIR TEMPERATURE RESPONSE CURVES ARE PRESENTED FOR DIFFERENT WALL CONSTRUCTIONS. CHANGING THE INTERIOR PARTITIONING FROM LIGHT AND INSULATED TO THERMALLY MASSIVE AND UNINSULATED RESULTED IN A SIGNIFICANT IMPROVEMENT IN THE TEMPERATURE RESPONSE DURING THE 24 HOURS FOLLOWING AN INTERRUPTION IN HEATING OR IN COOLING.
