Summary

Underground thermal energy storage (part 3 of the guideline VDI 4640) can serve for heating or cooling purposes. This technique is especially suited for storing large quantities of heat or cold over extended periods of time. Heat from renewable energy sources or waste heat can be used at a later date. Another application is the storage of environmental cold for cooling applications. Part 3 of the guideline VDI 4640 focuses on questions such as the choice of materials, environmental effects, required licenses, and the integration into the system, with regard to various practical examples. This guideline substitutes the draft edition of March 2000 (see the IIR Bulletin, reference 2000-2862).
