Thermodynamic analysis of scroll, rolling piston and reciprocating compressors for commercial refrigeration.

Summary

This paper presents a thermodynamic analysis of three types of compressors (reciprocating, rolling piston and scroll) applied to commercial refrigeration. Fulfilling the increasing requirements for high efficiency and low cost products requires an in-depth knowledge of each compressor type as well as the identification of alternatives to improve them. The models adopted to simulate the compressors are based on integral formulations. The numerical results were validated through comparisons with experimental data obtained in an experimental calorimeter facility. An important aspect considered in the work was the optimization of each type of compressor for the refrigerating capacities chosen for the analysis. Results for energy and mass losses due to leakage, valve restriction and residual mass left after the discharge process were employed to assess their performance through the thermodynamic coefficient of performance and the volumetric efficiency.
