Thermostats: applications, time constants, charges, and bulb locations.

Type of article: Article

Summary

The author defines the time constant of a thermostat and describes its effect on the over and undershooting in the temperature of the controlled variable when a two-step thermostat is used. To decrease the temperature variation in the controlled variable, the peripheral causes of the time constant can be reduced, eg better heat transfer contact between sensing bulb and sensed temperature. The effects of different bulb charges and limiting arrangements are also described. D.W.H.
