Summary

A review of the Japanese water chiller market. Production of absorption chillers of all sizes remains steady at about 6300 units per year, of which 350 are exported. There have been some improvements in efficiency and control in recent years. There are 6 main manufacturers. The total market in the Japan-China-Korea area is estimated at 8000 units per year. Production of centrifugal chillers fell by 80% to 274 units in 1992, and this fall is expected to continue. For medium-sized chillers, screw compressors are superseding reciprocating. Total production is steady at 16,000 per year. Multi-split systems now account for 7% of a total of 785,000 packaged air conditioners per year. An increasing market is noted for gas-engine-powered cooling/heat pump units in household and commercial sizes. Now at about 30,000 units per year, this market is helped by concessions from gas utilities. A.R.T.
