Summary

A review of the Japanese water chiller market. Production of absorption chillers of all sizes remains steady at about 6,300 units per year, of which 350 are exported. There have been some improvements in efficiency and control in recent years. There are six main manufacturers. The total market in the Japan-China-Korea area is estimated at 8,000 units per year. Production of centrifugal chillers has fallen by 80% to 274 units in 1992 and this fall is expected to continue. For medium sized chillers screw compressor are superseding reciprocating. Total production is steady at 16,000 per year. Multi-split systems now account for 7% of a total of 785,000 packaged air-conditioners per year. An increasing market for gas engine powered cooling/heat pump units in domestic and commercial sizes. Now about 30,000 per year. This market is helped by concessions from gas utilities. A.R.T.
