Turbulent quantities of a natural-convection flow in a side-heated enclosure: experiments and calculations.

Summary

In this article experimental data, using laser doppler anemometry and thermocouples, and numerical data, using k-epsilon modelling and Reynolds stress modelling, is presented obtained in square enclosures, heated from the side. The data is obtained for Rayleigh numbers between 2 and 50 billion, thus reaching nearly fully developed turbulence. The comparison between measured and numerically predicted quantities shows that the turbulence models need triggering to capture the turbulence aspects correctly, but that the same triggering hampers a good description of laminar regimes in the natural convection flows. Especially at lower values of the Rayleigh number this becomes apparent.
