Numerical simulation of natural convective heat transfer of multiple isolated plates in an enclosure.

Summary

The natural convective heat transfer coefficients (N-CHTCs) in an enclosure has a great impact on the thermal design of electronic appliance, especially the N-CHTCs in an enclosure with internal isolated plates. In this paper, validation of the turbulence model for computational fluid dynamics simulation of natural convection heat transfer (NCHT) in an enclosure is performed first, with a low Reynolds kappa-epsilon model. With the same method, the simulation of NCHT of different number of isolated plates in an enclosure, i.e. two, four, six and eight isolated plates, is studied. For the NCHT of the isolated plates, the dimensionless Nusselt number is obtained according to the calculated results. The paper also indicates that the typical height of the isolated plates should be less than 3/4 of the enclosure length in order to decrease the wall effects.
