A NUMBER EXIST IN USA AND NORTHERN EUROPE. SOME ARE PURPOSE BUILT, OTHERS CONVERTED FROM EXISTING MINES. TUNNELLED ENTRANCE FROM A HILLSLOPE IS CHEAPER THAN SHAFTS AND THE EXCAVATED STRATA MUST BE GEOLOGICALLY SAFE. SUCH STORES REQUIRE NO INSULATION AND ARE NOT SUSCEPTIBLE TO FROST HEAVE. THE LARGER THE STORE, THE LOWER THE FIRST COST COMPARED WITH THOSE AT GROUND LEVEL, WHILST ALL REQUIRE LESS OPERATING ENERGY, ALTHOUGH INITIAL COOLING MAY MAKE USE OF STANDBY PLANT. D.W.H.
