Summary

A THEORETICAL COMPARATIVE STUDY ON 5 STORAGE-HANDLING SYSTEMS USED IN LARGE PUBLIC COLD STORES, STARTING WITH A 1,250 M2 COLD ROOM WITH 1,300 TO 1,900 PALLETS, DEPENDING ON THE SYSTEM, AND WITH A DAILY RATE OF 100 PALLETS IN AND OUT. THE SYSTEMS CONSIDERED ARE: 1) MASS STORAGE WITH REACH TRUCKS ; 2) FIXED PALLET RACK WITH REACH TRUCKS ; 3) MOBILE PALLET RACK WITH REACH TRUCKS ; 4) FIXED PALLET RACK WITH BI-DIRECTIONAL TRUCKS ; AND 5) FIXED PALLET RACK WITH TRI-DIRECTIAC. THE FIXED PALLET RACK WITH RETRIEVER CRANE IS NOT CONSIDERED, AS IT IS NOT JUSTIFIED FOR A LOW ENTRY-EXIT RATE. THE METHODOLOGY USED IN THE STUDY IS PRESENTED ; THE PARAMETERS USED ARE DEFINED ; THE PERMITTED POSITIONS OF THE PALLET TRUCKS IN EACH OF THE 5 CASES ARE ILLUSTRATED WITH SKETCHES ; THE COST CALCULATION IS DETAILED. COMPARATIVE TABLES BRING OUT CALCULABLE CRITERIA, AS WELL AS OTHER PARAMETERS, WHICH ARE EVALUATED RELATIVELY (FLEXIBILITY, RELIABILITY, SAFETY, AUTOMATION, ETC). J.R.
