Unfavourable frost: what is it, when does it occur and how can it be avoided?

Summary

Air cooling coils in most refrigerated applications become frosted and must be periodically defrosted. Unfavourable frost forms if the coil air approach line crosses into the super-saturated region on a psychrometric chart. Unfavourable frost is low density, fluffy, snow-like frost that quickly blocks coil airflow, resulting in rapid deterioration in coil performance compared with other frost types. Design and operating conditions to avoid unfavourable frost are defined and quantitative methods to predict unfavourable frost formation are presented.
