Unified water adsorption measurement procedure for sorption materials.

Author(s) : HENNINGER S. K., FRENI A., SCHNABEL L., et al.

Summary

The determination of the water adsorption equilibrium on sorption materials is the first step for evaluation of the materials to be used in an adsorption heat pump or chiller. Unfortunately, measurement procedures are up today not standardized and therefore hardly comparable. Several measurements are published, but even for the same materials they may be dissimilar due to different measurement techniques and boundary conditions. Beside different measurement methods like thermogravimetry or volumetric characterization, the pre-treatment and the measuring procedure have a great influence on the results. Within the framework of a working group of the international energy agency IEA annex 34 “Thermally driven heat pumps” several research institutes and companies discussed a standard measurement procedure for adsorption material properties. The paper describes the proposed standard test procedure for adsorption materials with focus on thermally driven heating or cooling systems, show first results comparing several materials across two institutes in a round robin test. Furthermore, the paper is aimed to stimulate the discussion about the procedures as well as invite to participate and use this procedure and upload the results to an online database to create a public knowledge about available sorption material properties on a comparable base.
