Using a new solar sterilizer for surgical instruments as a solar oven for cooking.

Summary

This paper presents the preliminary experience from using a solar concentrator designed to sterilize surgical equipment as a solar oven for cooking. The design of this sterilizer, which consists -as the original Tolokatsin solar ovens- of a Multi-Compound Solar Concentrator, was made intending to surpass 160°C in order to substitute commercial Pasteur sterilizers. After proving it makes an excellent job as sterilizer, its use as a solar cooker was suggested. This last application has shown to be very successful due to a faster time of cooking than the corresponding to the original Tolokatsin design, and its capability of reaching much higher temperatures, but for safety reasons because of these high temperatures, it must not be hermetically closed to prevent excessively high pressures inside the sterilizer. However, these undesired extremely high temperatures are unlikely due to the movement of the Sun that limits the exposure time, and the thermal inertia of the meals to be cooked.
