Summary

THE AUTHORS DESCRIBE A NOVEL ABSORPTION DEVICE SUITABLE FOR INCLUSION IN A COMPACT-SIZED ABSORPTION HEAT PUMP. THEY PRESENT AN ISOTHERMAL FALLING-FILM ABSORBER AND APPROPRIATE CALCULATIONS TO SHOW THE NECESSARILY LAMINAR NATURE OF SUCH FILMS. A MEANS OF MECHANICALLY REDUCING THE FILM SURFACE LIFETIME WITHIN AN ADIABATIC ABSORBER IS EXPLAINED. INITIAL EXPERIMENTAL RESULTS ARE DISCUSSED AND REASONS FOR DEVIATION FROM THE THEORY SUGGESTED. ABSORPTION COEFFICIENTS ABOUT 7 TIMES THOSE OF FILMS FALLING UNDER GRAVITY ARE SHOWN TO BE ACHIEVABLE.
