WATER SPRAY COOLER FOR COOLING HOT WORKING ENVIRONMENTS IN MINES.
Author(s) : THIMONS E. D., MCCOY J. F., MARKS J. R.
Summary
THE NEED FOR MORE EFFICIENT MINE REFRIGERATION EQUIPMENT IS GREATER THAN EVER, AS INCREASING NUMBERS OF US MINES ARE BEING OPERATED AT GREATER DEPTHS. THE COMBINATION OF HIGH TEMPERATURES AND HIGH HUMIDITIES MAKE A COMFORTABLE WORKING ENVIRONMENT DIFFICULT. MINERS' SAFETY, COMFORT, AND PRODUCTIVITY ALL SUFFER IF AIR REFRIGERATION NEEDS ARE NOT SATISFIED. THE WATER SPRAY COOLERS DESCRIBED IN THE REPORT ARE EFFICIENT AND ECONOMICAL DEVICES FOR DEALING WITH THE HEAT PROBLEM ENCOUNTERED IN DEEP MINES. FOUR LIMITED BULK WATER SPRAY COOLERS WERE DESIGNED AND BUILT. THE FIRST IS A SINGLE STAGE UNIT. THE REMAINING COOLERS ARE A TWO-STAGE COOLER AND 2 THREE-STAGE COOLERS. TO DATE ALL THE COOLERS HAVE PERFORMED WELL UNDER MINE CONDITIONS AND HAVE REQUIRED ONLY MINIMAL MAINTENANCE. THE PAPER DETAILS THE DESIGN AND PERFORMANCE OF THESE COOLERS.
