Summary

THE AUTHOR ARGUES THE CASE FOR WATER-COOLED CONDENSING SYSTEMS USING COOLING TOWERS OR EVAPORATIVE CONDENSERS. RECENT CASES OF LEGIONNAIRES' DISEASE HAVE PRODUCED A TREND TOWARDS THE < SAFER > AIR-COOLED CONDENSERS OR AIR-COOLED WATER COOLERS. THESE HOWEVER RAISE RUNNING COSTS AND INCREASE ENERGY USAGE BY ABOUT 20% DUE TO HIGHER CONDENSING TEMPERATURES AND EXCESSIVE FAN POWER. IN FACT, SHOULD ALL THE TOWERS IN THE UNITED KINGDOM BE ABANDONED IN FAVOUR OF AIR COOLING, IT IS ESTIMATED THAT 740 MEGAWATTS ADDITIONAL GENERATING CAPACITY WOULD BE REQUIRED. LEGIONELLA WILL NOT CONTAMINATE A PROPERLY DESIGNED, INSTALLED AND MAINTAINED COOLING TOWER. THIS IS THE FACT ON WHICH THE FUTURE SHOULD BE DECIDED. D.W.H.
