What can SQUIDs tell about the human brain?
Author(s) : KNUUTILA J.
Summary
Magnetoencephalography (MEG), the study of the magnetic fields generated by the neuroelectric activity of the brain is the largest and most important application of superconducting SQUID sensors. MEG allows monitoring the sequence of neural events by following the 3-D location of the activity as a function of time. Combined with static anatomic MRI data, this information provides functional imaging with excellent spatio-temporal resolution for both brain research scientists and clinical physicians. Basic principles of the method and instrumentation are reviewed, and actual systems and their application in studies of the healthy and abnormal brain are illustrated.
