What CVI stake in refrigerators?
Author(s) : DUTTON G.
Type of article: Periodical article
Summary
The article surveys the present state of research into improvements in efficiency for household refrigerators. The Environmental Protection Agency in the USA is sponsoring the Super Efficient Refrigerator Project. USD 30 million is being offered for a refrigerator which uses 30 to 50% less energy. Savings are most likely in the insulation used. The present trends include microcells in foam insulants, micropore fibres, aerogels, safe emulsion agar gels and several types of vacuum insulation. Of these, interesting developments are the gels from agar which are easy to manufacture and biodegradable, and materials such as silica under vacuum in sealed panels. D.W.H.
