Summary

This document is the 3rd version of the White Paper and is a follow-up to the Symposium on "Challenges and Perspectives in Heating Applications for Science, Industry and the Environment" of January 12, 2005. It contains an overview of the perspectives and work in a field increasingly criticised for the planetary energy stakes involved. One of the major challenges the production, distribution, conservation and use of energy. Excerpt from the summary: heat radiation; heat transfer by convection in single-phase environments; heat transfer at micronic and submicronic scales; heat transfer in heterogeneous environments; thermal aspects of systems (exchangers; heat engines; electronics and electrical engineering; fuel cells and their peripheral devices; solar heating; heat management in certain industrial processes (agri-food industry: processes for preparation and implementation of equipment; management of heating and refrigeration; building and environmental heating; heat created by living beings); heat-specific methodologies (heat measurements: properties and fields; modelling and simulation techniques; reciprocal methods; fundamental thermodynamics); contributions from the symposium of January 12, 2005; summary and conclusions.
