IN ORDER TO REDUCE THE SPACE OF COLD ROOMS FOR THE STORAGE OF DORMANT CUTTINGS AND TO SAVE LABOUR ON GRAFTING, DORMANT BUDS SHIELDS WERE CUT AND THEY WERE STORED TILL SPRING. THREE THOUSAND BUD SHIELDS WERE STORED IN THE SPACE REQUIRED FOR THE STORAGE OF ABOUT ONE HUNDRED CUTTINGS, GIVING ABOUT 500 BUD SHIELDS. THE SUCCESS RATE WITH BUD SHIELDS STORED IN SAND WAS 97% AGAINST 98% FOR CUTTINGS.
