YOU HAVE TO BE CURRENT ON ELECTRIC MOTORS.

Type of article: Article, IJR article

Summary

THE AUTHOR DISPELS SOME BELIEFS HELD MISTAKENLY BY USERS AND SUPPLIERS OF ELECTRIC MOTORS DRIVINGRECIPROCATING COMPRESSORS. CONTRARY TO SOME UNDERSTANDINGS, OVERSIZED MOTORS DO NOT SUFFER SIGNIFICANTLY MORE LOSSES AT REDUCED LOAD THAN SMALLER MOTORS AT FULL LOAD. FURTHERMORE IT IS NOT GENERALLY REALISED THAT THE OSCILLATION OF CURRENT CAUSED BY WAVES OF POWER ON VARYING CRANKANGLE MAY PRODUCE HIGH PEAKS WHICH CAUSE OVERHEATING OF MOTORS SIZED TOO TIGHTLY. THE RECOMMENDATION IS TO OVERSIZE MOTORS TO PREVENT BREAKDOWN AND SAVE MONEY. D.W.H.
