Colombia: financial aid to renew the stock of domestic refrigerators

In Colombia, 17,553 people have benefited since January 2019 from a programme to replace old domestic refrigerators with new units using isobutane (R600a).

A support project was launched in Colombia in January 2019. The “Nama Support Project” (NSP) aims to help low-income families reduce their energy consumption. In just over four and a half years, the NSP has enabled these households to save 303,219 tonnes of CO2e emissions, according to the Green Cooling Initiative*, which is piloting the project.

The NSP has implemented a substitution programme for 300,000 domestic refrigerators. These are being replaced by refrigerators running on R600a and offered at half price to the households concerned.

The NSP also aims to train more than 200 people in the installation and maintenance of equipment running on R600a.

* The Green Cooling Initiative (GCI) is an international forum that connects policy-makers, technology providers and consumers, research institutes and non-governmental organisations (NGOs) in the field of refrigeration and air conditioning.
