Commission E2: at the forefront of heat pumps and energy recovery

Activities of the IIR’s Commission E2 “Heat Pumps, Energy Recovery”

Spotlight on Commission E2: at the forefront of heat pumps and energy recovery

“The Commission “Heat Pumps, Energy Recovery” is at the heart of current international, regional and national discussions and decisions on climate change. Its role is of great importance …”

Prof. Per Lundqvist, President of Commission E2

Coordinated by the IIR Science and Technology Council, Commission E2 is aimed at promoting knowledge of heat pump and energy recovery technology and their applications worldwide.

With a crucial role in the energy system of the future, heat pumps have provided today’s world with alternatives. No other technology can offer net primary energy savings and economic benefits to users, while reducing climate impact.

To achieve such benefits, systems have to be highly efficient, reliable and cost effective, but also smart and connected. This is exactly what Commission E2, comprised of 55 experts from 24 IIR member countries, strives for: to meet those challenges and go beyond them.

Vital for the future of energy efficient technologies, Commission E2 regularly coordinates and pools skills with other IIR commissions to promote and share research findings.

Focused workshops on heat pumps and energy recovery at ICR2015

Naturally, Commission E2 will participate in the 24th IIR International Congress of Refrigeration (ICR2015) from 16 to 22 August 2015 in Yokohama, Japan.

During ICR2015 Commission E2 will reunite, on 19 August 2015, to discuss progress within the field and future opportunities (see IIR commission meetings schedule at ICR2015).

For all those interested in heat pumps and/or energy recovery, ICR2015 has organised two workshops …

The workshop on Heating and Power from Low Temperature Heat will focus on examining the potential of emerging Organic Rankine Cycle (ORC) and High Temperature Heat Pump (HTHP) technologies to provide power and heating from low temperature heat with reduced costs and environmental impact.

The workshop on Heat Pump Systems R&D By NEDO will focus on:

  • sharing the achievements of NEDO projects on heat pump technologies
  • discussing and exchanging opinions on new ideas on technologies to achieve greater energy savings
  • promoting new energy saving projects
  • supporting the commercialisation of NEDO technologies.

Through presentations and round table discussions with audience participation, these workshops will create a stimulating environment for dynamic exchanges on cutting-edge topics.

IIR Working Groups and Commission E2

During ICR2015, Commission E2 will also participate in two IIR Working Group meetings:

  • Life Cycle Climate Performance Evaluation LCCP
  • Refrigerant Charge Reduction in Refrigeration Systems.

It is also involved in two other IIR Working Groups on the “Mitigation of Direct Emissions of Greenhouse Gases in Refrigeration” and “Refrigerant System Safety”.

A truly active Commission

Since the last IIR International Congress of Refrigeration (ICR) in August 2011 Commission E2 has participated in 6 IIR conferences and 13 IIR co-sponsored conferences.

The 11th IIR-Gustav Lorentzen Conference on Natural Refrigerants which took place in Hangzhou, China, in 2014 attracted 135 papers (available in FRIDOC), nearly a quarter of which (22%) focused on heat pump technology. Commissions B1-B2-E1-E2 took the opportunity to converge at this conference, and invited commission members to review ongoing projects, confirming that heat pumps have become an industry focal point.

This was again bolstered by the 127 papers presented during the IIR-co-sponsored International Sorption Heat Pump Conference (ISHPC2014), held in College Park, Maryland, USA, from 31 March to 3 April 2014, which attested to the sturdiness of research in sorption heat pump technology.

Now available: Papers from the 2014 Purdue conferences University, United States, on:

  • Refrigeration and air conditioning conference
  • High performance buildings conference
  • Compressor engineering
