Egypt Sets Clear HFC Phase-Down Commitments in Line with Kigali Amendment
Egypt outlines a structured HFC phase-down roadmap at OEWG-47, reinforcing its commitment to Kigali targets and sustainable refrigeration practices.
As part of its obligations under the Kigali Amendment to the Montreal Protocol, Egypt has officially announced a series of national commitments to phase down the use of hydrofluorocarbons (HFCs) across key sectors. These commitments mark a significant step forward in the country’s efforts to transition toward low-global-warming-potential (GWP) alternatives and promote sustainable refrigeration and air conditioning practices.
Sector-Specific Phase-Out Deadlines
Egypt’s national strategy outlines the following deadlines for the phase-out of HFCs:
- Polyurethane foams using HFC-245fa and HFC-365mfc:
➤ To be phased out by 1 January 2028
- Extruded polystyrene (XPS) foams using HFC-152a:
➤ To be phased out by 1 January 2028
- Domestic refrigerators using HFCs:
➤ To be phased out by 1 January 2029
- Standalone commercial refrigeration equipment using HFCs:
➤ To be phased out by 1 January 2029
- Residential air-conditioning units using R-410A:
➤ To be phased out by 1 January 2029
These measures are aligned with Egypt’s broader climate and environmental goals and are expected to contribute significantly to the reduction of greenhouse gas emissions from the cooling sector.
Collaboration and Implementation
Successful implementation will require continued collaboration between government agencies, industry stakeholders, and international partners. The IIR remains committed to supporting its members through the dissemination of technical knowledge, best practices, and training resources to facilitate this transition.
