In order to comply with the European Union "F-gas" regulation  applicable from January 1, 2015, SEM Lorient-Keroman , managing company of Lorient, France, fishing port has decided to delete the entire HCFC C22 present on the site and replace it by ammonia, which has a virtually nil climate impact.

In 2010, 650 Kg of R22 had already been replaced in the southern-side ice tower. This time, the port teams started work on auction sites 2 and 3. "We just withdrew a hundred kg of R22 on auction 3 which were immediately removed in order to be destroyed , indicates Alain Le Srat, head of the refrigeration service ". The installation was stopped and then reconnected to the maritime station which now cools all the rooms at a temperature of 0°C. " 60 Kg of ammonia are enough for this ", added the manager. On auction site 2, a provisional solution was implemented while waiting for a complete system overhaul. Here, "R22 was replaced by R407 C, a much cleaner and more suitable refrigerant for the compressors which wouldn't have been able to withstand ammonia", continues Alain Le Strat.

Refrigeration plays an important role ia Keroman. Essential to preserve the goods in the best conditions, and thus improve their marketing, the  port refrigeration service mobilizes a team of 4 full-time staff. As an indication, the Lorient fishing port produces on average, every year, over 9000 tons of ice!
