Heat pump sales grew dramatically in Europe in 2021
According to the 2022 market report by the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA), heat pump sales grew by +34% in 2021, compared to a +7.4% growth in 2020.
The market report by the European Heat Pump Association (EHPA) covers 21 European countries. Among these countries, the total heat pump stock currently amounts to 16.98 million units, covering around 14% of the heating market. Between 2020 and 2021, heat pump sales grew by an impressive +34%. [1] As a comparison, heat pump sales had grown by +7.4% between 2019 and 2020.
Ten countries account for most of the European market volume. [2] The five biggest European heat pump markets in 2021 in terms of units sold (heat pumps and hot water units) were France (537,000 units sold, +36%), Italy (382,000, +64%), Germany (177,000, +26%), Spain (148,000, +16%), and Sweden (135,000, +19%).
The EHPA estimates that the heat pump stock avoided 44 Mt of CO2 emissions in 2021. [1] CO2 emission savings are calculated by comparing emissions of a heat pump with those of a gas-condensing boiler.
