New EU research project BETTED gets underway!

The IIR is one of 10 partners of the new European research project aimed at promoting the energy transition of the dairy value chain.

BETTED kick-off meeting in Brussels

On March 12th, 2024, the consortium partners of the new EU project BETTED, met at the 1st Kick-Off meeting in Brussels (Belgium).

Held in hybrid format, the meeting gave way to dynamic exchange with 20 participants on site, and 10 online, including the IRENA Project Officer from the European Commission.

During this intensive full day, the different Work Package Leaders presented their respective objectives, targets and upcoming tasks/actions with regard to the project.

The project objectives

BETTED, which stands for Boosting Energy Transition of ThE Dairy value chain, will aim to facilitate dairy supply chain SMEs to foster the market uptake of energy efficiency measures, including the use of renewables and the deployment of heat.

Funded by the Programme for the Environment and Climate Action (LIFE), the project will significantly contribute to the reduction of fossil fuel dependency, with the aim of focusing on three main pillars:

  • Creating a capacity-building programme and a community dedicated to supporting the change in the energy culture of organisations by improving their skills/knowledge/awareness/know-how on the role of sustainable value chains in promoting the energy transition for small but also large companies.
  • Implementing tailored and easy-to-use tools engaging companies operating in the same value chain, in order to:
  1. foster the market uptake of energy efficiency and sustainable measures;
  2. assess the multiple benefits achievable from collaborative approaches between large and small companies.
  • Providing policy/regulatory recommendations aimed at speeding up the energy transition.

The role of the IIR

Within the framework of this project, the IIR will provide key support to:

  • Organise and facilitate BETTED workshops at IIR conferences, co-sponsored conferences and other events.
  • Assist in identifying stakeholders involved in the refrigeration stages of the dairy supply chain.
  • Facilitate the publication of academic papers in the International Journal of Refrigeration (IJR) and other high impact journals.
  • Contribute to the methodology of the training material of the e-learning platform.
  • Gather information on energy consumption of the refrigerated logistic activities in the dairy sector.
  • Promote BETTED at trade exhibitions, international meetings and conferences.

The official project website will be launched soon. Stay tuned!

The BETTED project coordinator is advertising a post-doctorat at the University of Brescia, as described below:

Title project:

Development of models for energy-efficient supply chains

Description of the research program:

The researcher will work in the field of the development of models for the energy efficiency of production logistics systems. In particular, the topics will concern the development of models for the assessment and benchmarking of energy consumption in the different levels of the supply chains of the dairy sector, with explicit reference to the indication of savings opportunities, life cycle assessments, non-energy benefits and behavioural aspects, also with the aim of developing tools to support the training of non-energy experts of the various companies belonging to the supply chains. The development of application tools and their validation on specific case studies will be required. Analytical modelling and simulation tools will be used with specific reference to the analysis, design and management of services and logistics and with particular regard to production/storage/transport technologies in refrigeration contexts also with reference to the potential use of heat pumps and control of storage conditions. The researcher will therefore be called upon to deal with specialists from other engineering sectors, both in the academic and industrial fields, as well as with realities concerning technology transfer.

Teaching activity:

A course or laboratory activity, assigned by the Department of Civil Engineering, Architecture, Land, Environment and Mathematics (DICATAM), compatible with the researcher's scientific and teaching skills.

Target group:

Early stage researcher or 0-4 yrs (Post graduate)
