Obituary: Guy Gistau

Guy Gistau, a leading figure in cryogenics, has passed away. The IIR sends its most sincere condolences and deepest sympathy to his family and friends.

An engineer who graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure des Arts et Métiers in 1963, Guy Gistau-Baguer has devoted his career to the field of cryogenics, in particular helium refrigeration and liquefaction. During his career at Air Liquide, Guy was instrumental in developing technologies for helium refrigeration at very low temperatures.

Guy was a respected expert in the international scientific community. He was a member of the International Cryogenic Engineering Committee (ICEC) for more than two decades, serving as its chairman from 1998 to 2008. He was a member of the ‘Cryogenics and Superconductivity’ commission of the Association Française du Froid (AFF). He was also a commission member of the International Institute of Refrigeration (IIR), making a significant contribution to the dissemination of knowledge within the A1 ‘Cryophysics, cryotechnics’ commission and the A2 ‘Liquefaction and gas separation’ commission.

Even after his retirement in 2000, Guy never stopped sharing his knowledge. He has been an outstanding teacher and lecturer to many operators, technicians, engineers and scientists around the world.
