US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton announced on February 16, 2012, the Climate and Clean Air Coalition to Reduce Short-Lived Climate Pollutants; it will focus on reducing black carbon, HFCs and methane, particularly in developing countries – which together account for about 1/3rd of current global warming – by driving national action plans and the adoption of policy priorities.
The founding coalition partners are Bangladesh, Canada, Ghana, Mexico, Sweden and the US, together with UNEP. The Coalition is expected to expand rapidly to include at least 40 countries in the coming months.
A dedicated fund is being raised, with an initial contribution of 15 million USD from the US and Canada for the first 2 years.
