The Centers for Disease Control consider that 73 000 cases of illness due to Escherichia coli O157 occur annually in the USA, leading to 2000 hospital admissions and 60 deaths. The cost incurred was USD 405 million in 2003. These data illustrate the need for additional efforts aimed at control.
