27 MW industrial cooling applications based on the IDE's energy efficient vacuum icemaker.

Author(s) : EFRAT T., ROTT S.

Summary

The past couple of decades have been characterized by many catch phrases, among which soaring energy costs and ever growing peak demand, global warming, environmental protection and nature preservation were probably the catchiest. All of the above are addressed by the IDE's Energy Efficient VIM based on the extended experience in large vapour compression desalination technology and development of high volumetric flow centrifugal compressors. The VIM produces ice slurry with typical grain size of 0.5-1.0 mm, which is pumpable and can be stored in simple empty tanks for TES; or, it can be concentrated (typical ice concentration of 75%) resulting in transportable media. AngloGold Ashanty Gold mine's 27 MW cooling capacity plants case study is presented, and it is shown how VIM system can deliver up to 60% energy savings, compared to the conventional water cooling by utilizing the latent heat of ice.
